an invitation to a life of spiritual discipline

i'm currently reading through mudhouse sabbath by lauren winner. she is a well-known author who converted from orthodox judaism to christianity. mudhouse sabbath is a very short book (as in, one can probably read the entire thing in one sitting) that discusses 11 jewish spiritual disciplines from which christians can learn. in the book's introduction, winner writes:

this book is about paths to the God of Israel that both jews and christians travel. it is, to be blunt, about spiritual practices that jews do better. it is, to be blunter, about christian practices that would be enriched, that would be thicker and more vibrant, if we took a few lessons from judaism. it is ultimately about places where christians have things to learn.

each chapter covers a different jewish spiritual discipline and offers practical thinking on how christians can incorporate such disciplines in our worship lives. after reading the first two paragraphs, i have concluded that this is one of those books that deserve more than just a basic read, so i decided to do more with it. starting in the new year, for 11 weeks, i will be blogging through the book. i'll take one spiritual discipline/chapter a week and offer my own reflections on the practice which i will post on this blog. i'm doing this in part because i accomplish the discipline of reflection through writing. so tune in, if you care about my two cents when it comes to 11 different jewish disciplines. or pick up a copy of the book and read about the disciplines with me!
