#23 - Catch up with a long-lost friend

today, i spontaneously met up with a friend i haven't seen in nearly 7 years.

kelvin and i were once best friends back in grammar school. recently, we reconnected over facebook with the goal to meet up in person and see where life has taken us these last few years. the last time i can remember talking with him was when we were attending the same high school as freshmen. since then, we'd maybe run into each other around town, but nothing much.

tonight, after some text messaging, we decided to meet up and get some dessert from the IHOP nearby. another best friend from my childhood was there as well - my friend christie, who i'd done a better job catching up with. we spent a few hours reminiscing, talking about days of old and appreciating the lessons learned from growing up and growing apart. kelvin's life had taken him across the nation and through many states, gathering much wisdom about life in the process.

the passing of years can feel very quick at times and rather slow at times. it was heartening to experience the ease with which precious memories from the past can be remembered so quickly after they had not been thought about for so long. for me, the task of looking back is bittersweet. you cannot celebrate the joys of simpler times without at least acknowledging the wounds you have healed from since then.

as i move forward in life and anticipate the transitions of the immediate future, this experience has allowed me to appreciate the fact that life's experiences - good or bad - are never futile. they shape who we are and allow us to move closer towards the person we were created to be.
